Android: Bypass Do Not Disturb

Ensure critical medical calls reach you even when your Android device is in Do Not Disturb mode. Follow these step-by-step guides to configure priority contacts and exception settings.

Method 1: Priority Contacts (Recommended)

Set your practice's phone number as a starred contact to always allow calls

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1
    Open the Contacts app

Find and tap the Contacts app on your home screen or app drawer

  2. 2
    Find your practice's number

Search for your medical practice's contact or add it if not present

  3. 3
    Edit the contact

Tap the contact name, then tap the "Edit" button (pencil icon)

  4. 4
    Mark as favorite

Tap the star icon (⭐) to mark this contact as a favorite

  5. 5
    Configure Do Not Disturb

Go to Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb

  6. 6
    Allow starred contacts

Enable "Allow calls from starred contacts"

Why This Method Works Best

Starred contacts are permanently recognized by Android's Do Not Disturb system, ensuring reliable call delivery regardless of device updates or changes.

Method 2: Allow Repeat Callers

Enable calls from numbers that call multiple times within 15 minutes

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1
    Open Settings

Navigate to Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb

  2. 2
    Enable repeat callers

    Toggle ON "Allow repeat callers"

  3. 3
    How it works

If the same number calls again within 15 minutes, the second call will bypass Do Not Disturb

Important Note

This method requires the caller to call twice within 15 minutes. For truly urgent medical calls, Method 1 (Priority Contacts) is more reliable.

Additional Android Tips

Extra configuration for optimal notification delivery

Volume Settings

  • • Keep ringer volume separate from media volume
  • • Set ringer to maximum even if media is muted
  • • Test with volume buttons during a test call

Device-Specific Settings

Samsung: Check "Exceptions" in Do Not Disturb settings

OnePlus: Look for "Priority notifications" in Zen Mode

Xiaomi: Configure "VIP contacts" in MIUI's DND settings

Google Pixel: Use the standard Android settings above

Testing Your Setup

  1. Enable Do Not Disturb on your device
  2. Ask a colleague to call from your practice number
  3. Verify the call comes through despite DND being active
  4. Test both starred contact and repeat caller methods if using both
